Frida’s Breast Milk Ice Cream Is Officially Here—Would You Try It?

I scream, you scream, we’re (finally) screaming for Frida’s Breast Milk Ice Cream! From SnotSuckers to postpartum packages to insemination kits, Frida—the popular company known for disrupting the parenting space—first announced back in March that they were going to drop a new creation that no one was expecting: Frida Breast Milk Ice Cream. Yes, you read that right—breast milk ice cream!

At the time, our Social Media Editor, Lex, posed the question we were all thinking: “Is this an early April Fools’ Day joke?” Frida obviously got that question too because they clarified they’d never “nip slip” like that. Fast forward a few months and, today, Frida fans can finally get a taste of their new and very real breast milk ice cream. Keep reading for the scoop (see what we did there) on where you can get a pint, if this treat is actually made with real breast milk, and more.

Why Frida made breast milk ice cream

With August being National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, the release of this breast milk-flavored ice cream coincides with Frida’s latest product, the 2-in-1 Manual Breast Pump. “We’ve been obsessed with feeding babies forever, and while developing our new breast pump we dove deep into the world of feeding—we’re talking research, interviews, and internet rabbit holes,” Frida said back in March when they first announced the breast milk ice cream.

At a time when colostrum powder and similar supplements continue gaining attention in the wellness industry, people like Instagram user @sahm.things, who commented, “I’m INTRIGUED 👀🍦” aren’t the only ones curious about breast milk. Kourtney Kardashian and Ashley Graham have talked publicly about tasting their own, and reality TV star Paige DeSorbo has even tried her friend’s breast milk. In an interview, DeSorbo said she was “obsessed with it.”

Is there human breast milk in Frida’s Breast Milk Ice Cream?

If you’re wondering if Frida’s Breast Milk Ice Cream actually contains any human breast milk, the answer is: it doesn’t. Instagram user @mama.truffle pointed out, “Friends, it’s not actual breast milk. It’s gonna be LIKE breast milk.” To make this new treat, Frida teamed up with OddFellows, an ice cream company that was started after owner Mohan Kumar’s wife, Holiday, had a pregnancy craving for savory ice cream (so fitting!).  According to Frida’s website, the limited-edition ice cream includes the following ingredients:

“Milk, Heavy Cream, Skim Milk Powder, Sugar, Dextrose, Egg Yolks, Invert Sugar, Guar Gum, Salted Caramel Flavoring (Cane Sugar, Water, Natural Flavors, Fruit Juice, Natural Caramel Flavor), Honey Syrup (Cane Sugar, Water, Organic Honey, Natural Flavors, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Natural Honey Flavor), Liposomal Bovine Colostrum, FD&C Yellow 5, and FD&C Red 40.”

Where you can purchase Frida’s Breast Milk Ice Cream?

If you’re in or near Brooklyn, New York, you can get a taste of the ice cream at the Frida Pop Up at OddFellows’ Dumbo location at 44 Water Street from Tuesday, August 5 (today) through Sunday, August 10. And if you’re needing a little midweek pick-me-up, the store is offering free scoops from Wednesday, August 6 through Sunday, August 10 from 12 to 1 p.m EST.

If you’re located outside of Brooklyn, don’t fret because you can buy a pint through Frida’s website, too. With a two-pint purchase minimum, buyers can have a scoop in their hands ASAP with two-day shipping at a price of $12.99 per pint. Packed in dry ice, it won’t melt during travel, either. Unfortunately, the company noted that they can’t deliver to Alaska or Hawaii.

Are there benefits to consuming breast milk?

While there isn’t human breast milk in Frida’s ice cream, there are benefits for babies who consume human breast milk. According to the CDC, the benefits of consuming breast milk for babies through breastfeeding include providing nutritional needs and antibodies for a strong immune system, lowering the risk of asthma, obesity, Type 1 diabetes, sudden infant death syndrome, and more. So, if breast milk is beneficial for babies, is it useful for adults, too?

There isn’t really a concrete answer for that question. Kourtney Kardashian once “pounded a glass of breast milk” when she was feeling sick and posted it to her Instagram story. Others, like Instagram user @nevamarie11, commented, “Literally put breastmilk in my coffee while I was sick. [It] worked wonders and tasted amazing.” However, with a lack of evidence-based research, it’s hard to say what the actual benefits of consuming breast milk is for adults.

However, there are some other unexpected uses for breast milk. One study revealed that public health nurses reported that fresh colostrum can treat “conjunctivitis, chapped nipples, rhinitis, [and] infections of the skin and soft tissues.” Other reports have shared that topical application of breast milk is an “effective treatment for diaper rash, atopic eczema, diaper dermatitis, and umbilical cord separation.”
