Greece With Kids: Why It’s One of the Best Family Trips for 2026

I’m the mom of a 9-year-old with far too much Greek mythology knowledge. And my dream travel destination has always been Greece. For our last family vacation, we decided to “book the trip.” After all, a year from now and the trip wouldn’t mean as much to him. If you’re wondering about traveling to Greece with kids, I’ve been there.

It seemed last summer, everyone was all about taking a family trip to Greece. In our 3rd grade class alone, there were 5 families planning a Greek summer vacation. Trendy or not, Greece is actually the ideal place for families. Like many other European countries, kids are welcomed into the fold and a large part of day-to-day life includes children.

Plus if you’re looking for incredible beaches with the bluest water you’ve ever seen, history, cuisine and a slow pace all in one, Greece is the place for you and your family. Considering whether to travel to Greece with your family and don’t know where to start? Here’s a guide with the best destinations to make the most of your Greece vacation with kids.

Is Greece Good for Kids?

In a word: yes. Greece is incredibly family‑oriented. Kids are welcome everywhere. From restaurants to ferries to late dinners in town squares. Our first meal, my jet-lagged son fell asleep at the dinner table and our waiters couldn’t have been sweeter about it. We also ended up on many midnight dinners. Meals are simple and approachable (grilled meats, pita, fries, yogurt, fresh fruit), and many destinations naturally lend themselves to outdoor exploration.

Add in short travel distances, warm hospitality, and endless opportunities for hands‑on learning (ancient ruins, mythology, geography), and Greece becomes an ideal mix of education and vacation.

Best Places to Visit in Greece With Kids

Naxos: One of the Best Greek Islands for Families

Naxos was our home base for our Greek adventure. My son is all about Greek myths and of all the islands this felt like the one with the most sites. From the Temple of Apollo to Temples to Dionysus and Demeter, if you’ve got a mythology-obsessed kiddo, this is the place for you. It’s much less crowded than Santorini or Mykonos and offers wide, sandy beaches perfect for kids.

Why families love Naxos:

  • Easy beaches like Agia Anna and Agios Prokopios (we stayed here and loved it!)
  • Relaxed pace and welcoming vibe
  • Small towns and villages that are easy to explore on foot
  • Simple ferry connections for short island hops

Naxos is an excellent choice for families who want classic Greek island beauty without the stress.

Crete: The Ultimate Family Base

If you want one destination that truly has it all, Crete is hard to beat. As Greece’s largest island, it offers sandy beaches, charming towns, archaeological sites, and outdoor adventures — without constant ferry hopping.

Families love Crete for:

  • Calm, swimmable beaches with shallow water
  • Ancient sites like the Palace of Knossos that feel straight out of a storybook
  • Walkable towns with family‑run tavernas
  • Nature experiences, from beaches to gorges to short hikes

Crete works especially well for longer trips or families who want variety without packing up every few days.

Rhodes: History, Beaches, and Big Fun

Rhodes is a fantastic option for families traveling with school‑aged kids and teens. Its medieval Old Town feels like a real‑life castle adventure, while its beaches and attractions keep days fun and flexible.

Highlights include:

  • Exploring Rhodes Old Town and city walls
  • Family‑friendly resorts and beaches
  • Faliraki Beach and one of Greece’s largest water parks

It’s a great blend of education, relaxation, and pure fun.

The Ionian Islands: Easygoing and Beach‑Focused

For families prioritizing soft sand, clear water, and laid‑back vibes, the Ionian Islands are a dream. These islands are often greener and calmer than the Cyclades, making them especially appealing for younger kids.

Top picks include:

  • Corfu for its charming Old Town and sandy beaches
  • Zakynthos for boat trips, sea caves, and turtle spotting
  • Kefalonia for dramatic scenery and beautiful family beaches

These islands are perfect for families who want beach days with just enough adventure mixed in.

Athens: More Than Just a Stopover

Funny enough, Athens was my little guy’s least favorite part of our Greek adventure. We hit all of the major points, and getting to the top of the Acropolis was absolutely magical. The July heat was relentless and after our time in Naxos it just couldn’t compare.

I wish we had done Athens first for a couple more nights and had a chance to slow down. Doing it too quickly with the heat made it feel stressful.

Family‑friendly highlights include:

  • The Acropolis and Acropolis Museum
  • Book a family-friendly mythology tour
  • Many hotels offer day passes to enjoy the pool when it is too hot out to think (our saving grace!)
  • Walkable neighborhoods and lively plazas
  • New green spaces and parks opening in 2025–2026

Greece With Kids Tricks and Tips

Book Ferries in Advance, Planes for Longer Distance

The ferry culture in Greece has become the stuff of true TikTok fodder. Running to get on the boat. Racing to beat the other passengers for a luggage spot. And seriously windy conditions making for a slightly green passage across the seas.

That being said, if you’re traveling from island-to-island ferries are your preferred mode of transportation. But, if you’re going Athens-to-island I’d recommend booking a plane. You’ll spend the same amount and have a much shorter ride.

Book Family-Friendly Hotels

Greece is a very family-friendly country, but like some places here there are definitely adults-only locations. Be mindful with some of the more popular and party-friendly islands like Santorini or Mykonos. Hotels in those destinations can have age minimums (15 years old).

When Is the Best Time to Visit Greece With Kids?

For families, the best times to visit are:

  • May–June: Warm weather, fewer crowds, ideal sightseeing
  • September–early October: Beach‑friendly temperatures with a calmer pace

July and August can be hot and busy, but are still doable if you prioritize beaches, pools, and downtime.
